Bandipora: Travel Guide for the Wular Basin and Gurez Road

Bandipora is situated on the northern shores of Wular Lake, at an average elevation of 1,578 meters (5,177 feet). The town is located 55 kilometers north of Srinagar. It serves as the administrative headquarters of the Bandipora district and is bordered by Ganderbal to the east and Kupwara to the west.

You will use Bandipora primarily as a transit point before crossing the Razdan Pass to Gurez Valley, or to access Wular Lake. The Bandipora-Gurez road begins in the main market of the town and is the sole motorable highway connecting the border region of Gurez to the rest of Kashmir.

Things to Do in Bandipora: Wular Lake and Beyond

Wular Lake borders the southern edge of Bandipora town. The lake is fed by the Jhelum River and covers an average area of 130 square kilometers. The wetland was designated as a Ramsar site in 1990. You can visit the lakeside park at Lankrishipora (5 km from town) or watch fishermen harvest water chestnuts. The J&K Tourism department operates a boat jetty here.

Razdan Pass stands at an elevation of 11,672 feet (3,558 meters), located 30 kilometers north of Bandipora town on the Gurez highway. The pass is the highest point on the road and remains blocked by snow from late December to April. A checkpost at Tragbal (15 km from Bandipora) registers all vehicles crossing the pass. Ensure you have your identification cards ready.

Athwatoo is a forest village located 11 kilometers northeast of Bandipora town. The village is situated along a fast-flowing mountain stream (the Arin Nallah). The stream is a local trout angling beat managed by the J&K Fisheries Department. The road to Athwatoo is narrow and paved, with a JKTDC tourist bungalow offering basic meals and rooms near the stream bank.

Kutbal is an archaeological site located on a hillside near Bandipora. Excavations at the site have revealed stone pottery, terracotta tiles, and remnants of structures dating to the Kushan period (1st to 3rd century CE). The site is undeveloped for tourism and can be reached by a 3-km walk from the nearest paved road head at Sumlar village. Sumlar is also a starting point for trekking routes leading to the Gangabal alpine lakes.

How to Reach Bandipora

The road from Srinagar to Bandipora is a 55-km route that takes approximately 2 hours. Drive north from Srinagar past the Hazratbal area and follow the Safapora-Bandipora road along the banks of Manasbal and Wular lakes. The road is paved and runs through flat agricultural plains.

Shared passenger cabs (Tata Sumos) depart regularly from Srinagar's Parimpora stand to the Bandipora main market. There is no direct train connection. The closest railway station is Sopore (25 km west), which lies on the local Baramulla-Banihal rail line.

Best Time to Visit Bandipora

Summer is April to September. Temperatures range from 15°C to 28°C. This is the only season when the Razdan Pass is open for travel to Gurez. The mountain streams are clear, and the crops of water chestnuts are harvested starting in late September.

Autumn runs from October to November. The weather is dry, and the skies are clear. Migratory birds begin arriving at the Wular lake basin in late October. Bring a windproof jacket as temperatures drop to 5°C at night.

Winter lasts from December to March. Razdan Pass experiences heavy snow, closing the Gurez road. Lower elevations near the lake receive light snow. Temperatures range from 8°C to -2°C. Most guesthouses operate with limited facilities.

Where to Stay in Bandipora

Accommodation options are basic. The town has a few local guesthouses and a JKTDC tourist bungalow near the DC office complex. For tourist-class hotels and resorts, you must stay in Srinagar and visit Bandipora as a day-trip.

If you plan to cross into Gurez, stay overnight in Dawar (Gurez town), where there are more homestay options. Bandipora is best used as a lunch and supplies stop before the 5-hour drive over the pass.

Essential Bandipora Travel Tips

• Permits for Gurez: Indian nationals must present their Aadhaar card at the Tragbal checkpost to cross the Razdan Pass. Foreign nationals must obtain special clearance from the Home Department office in Srinagar.
• Fuel Stop: Fill your vehicle's fuel tank at the petrol pumps in Bandipora town. There are no operational fuel stations between Bandipora and Dawar (Gurez), a distance of 86 km over mountain roads.
• BSNL Connectivity: Postpaid mobile signal from BSNL has the widest coverage along the Gurez road. Jio works in the main town but loses signal on the ascent to Razdan Pass.
