Baramulla: Travel Guide for the Gateway of North Kashmir
Baramulla is situated on both banks of the Jhelum River in northwestern Kashmir, at an elevation of 1,593 meters (5,226 feet). The town is located 54 kilometers northwest of Srinagar. The Jhelum River exits the flat plains of the Kashmir Valley at this point, flowing through a narrow gorge toward Uri and the Line of Control.
You will visit Baramulla for its historical landmarks and to use the local rail network. The name Baramulla is derived from the Sanskrit word Varahamula (meaning "boar's molar"), which originates from ancient Hindu texts describing the draining of Satisar Lake by the Varaha incarnation of Vishnu. The town connects Srinagar to the border areas of Uri and Kupwara.
Things to Do in Baramulla: Heritage and Riversides
The Eco Park is situated on an island in the middle of the Jhelum River, connected to the mainland near Kanispora by a suspension bridge. The park covers approximately 10 hectares and features walking paths, wooden viewpoints, and pine trees. The entry ticket is ₹20. The park is managed by the J&K Tourism department and is a common local recreation spot.
St. Joseph's Cathedral is located in the Cantonment area of Baramulla. Founded in 1891 by Mill Hill missionaries, it is one of the oldest Catholic churches in Jammu and Kashmir. The building was constructed using local red brick and timber. A school and a hospital, established in the late 1890s, operate adjacent to the cathedral grounds.
Sopore is the largest town in the Baramulla district, located 25 kilometers east of Baramulla town. Sopore is known as the apple capital of Kashmir and houses the largest fruit market (Mandi) in the valley. The market peaks between September and November when thousands of truckloads of apples are shipped daily to the rest of India.
Uri is a border town situated 46 kilometers west of Baramulla along the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway (NH1). The NHPC operates two major run-of-the-river hydroelectric projects on the Jhelum River near Uri (Uri-I and Uri-II, producing 480 MW and 240 MW respectively). The area is close to the Line of Control, and security checkposts regulate travel past the Uri town limits.
