Thajiwas Glacier Trek: The Glacial Day Walk of Sonamarg

The Thajiwas Glacier trek covers a distance of 6 kilometers (round trip), starting at the main Sonamarg market and ending at the glacier viewpoint at an elevation of 9,186 feet (2,800 meters). The trail follows the Thajiwas stream through birch forests to the base of the mountain snow fields. The trek takes 2 to 3 hours.

Route Breakdown

The Walk to the Glacier Viewpoint (3 km, 1 hour)
The walk begins at the Sonamarg taxi stand (elevation 8,956 ft). You will follow a paved concrete road that runs south along the Thajiwas stream. Vehicles are prohibited on this road. The trail has a gentle incline, climbing approximately 70 meters (230 feet) to the glacier viewpoint. You will pass through birch trees and cross wood bridges.

The Descent back to Sonamarg (3 km, 1 hour)
The return journey follows the same paved path back to the Sonamarg market. It is a gentle downhill walk.

Trek Difficulty & Fitness Reality

The trek is classified as Easy. The paved trail is wide, flat, and accessible for tourists of all age groups. No special hiking gear or high-altitude training is required. During early spring (April and May), the trail can have patches of hard snow. Wear comfortable walking shoes or sports sneakers.

Best Time for Thajiwas Glacier Trek

The best season is from April to October. The road from Srinagar is open, and the weather is warm (temperatures range from 10°C to 22°C). In winter (December to February), the road to Sonamarg is closed past Gagangeer due to snow, making the trek inaccessible.

How to Reach the Starting Point

Drive from Srinagar north on the Srinagar-Leh Highway (NH1D) to Sonamarg (80 km). The drive takes 2.5 hours. The trail starts at the southern end of the main Sonamarg market near the JKTDC huts crossing.

Permits and Guide Requirements

No special permits or forest registrations are required to walk this trail. The path is paved and well-populated; hiring a guide is not necessary. You can walk independently. Local pony handlers operate along the road if you prefer to ride.

What Makes Thajiwas Glacier Different

This is the most accessible glacier trek in Kashmir. You can walk to the base of the snow fields along a paved path in less than an hour, making it suitable for day-trippers who want to see snow during the summer months without camping.

Practical Tips

  • Pony and Sledge Rates: Pony rates are displayed on a government board at the trailhead. During winter and early spring, local sledge operators offer rides on the snow patches. Agree on the price before boarding.
  • Gumboots: Local vendors rent rubber boots at the entrance for ₹50 to ₹100. These are only necessary if you plan to walk onto the wet snow patches at the viewpoint.
  • Facilities: Several tea stalls and dhabas operate near the viewpoint, selling tea, coffee, and maggi. Cash is the preferred payment.
