Tulian Lake Trek
Trek Quick Facts
Tulian Lake Trek: The Steep Crater Trail of Pahalgam
The Tulian Lake trek covers a distance of 16 kilometers (round trip), starting and ending in Pahalgam town. The trail climbs steeply through the pine forests of Baisaran to reach Tulian Lake at an elevation of 12,080 feet (3,682 meters). The lake is crater-shaped and sits in a basin between the mountains. The trek is commonly done as a single, long 10-hour day hike.
Day-by-Day Route Breakdown
Stage 1: Pahalgam to Baisaran Meadow (4 km, 2 hours)
The trek begins at the bridge near the Pahalgam golf course (elevation 7,200 ft). You will climb a steep dirt trail through pine forests to the flat meadow of Baisaran (5 km, 7,920 ft). Many day tourists hire ponies for this section, so the trail can be muddy and uneven.
Stage 2: Baisaran to Tulian Valley (4 km, 3 hours)
From Baisaran, you will follow the stream trail past the tourist boundary line. The path enters a pine-forested gorge, climbing steadily along the Tulian stream. You will exit the tree line to enter the Tulian Valley, a rocky alpine pasture where shepherds camp in summer.
Stage 3: Tulian Valley to Tulian Lake (2 km, 1.5 hours)
The final section is a steep climb over rocky moraine and boulders to the rim of the lake basin. Tulian Lake (12,080 ft) sits inside the rocky bowl, often containing floating ice sheets until late June. After resting at the lake, you will descend via the same route back to Pahalgam, taking approximately 4 hours.
Trek Difficulty & Fitness Reality
The Tulian Lake trek is classified as Moderate-Difficult. Although the distance is short (16 km round trip), the trail ascends 1,500 meters (nearly 5,000 feet) in a short distance. The climb past the tree line involves scrambling over steep boulders. You must have strong knees and a good level of physical fitness to complete this in one day. Carry trekking poles to reduce impact on the descent.
Best Time for Tulian Lake Trek
The best season is from June to September. In May, the upper trail is covered in snow, making the final boulder scramble slippery. By late September, the weather is cold, and early winter snow can block the lake basin. July and August offer clear trails and green meadows in the lower valleys.
How to Reach the Starting Point
Drive from Srinagar to Pahalgam (95 km) via NH44 and the Khanabal-Pahalgam road. The drive takes 2.5 hours. The trailhead starts near the local amusement park or the golf course bridge in Pahalgam town. You can walk to the start from most hotels in the market.
Permits and Guide Requirements
No special forestry permits are required for this trek. You must register your entry details at the tourist reception counter near the trailhead. Hiring a local guide is recommended for the upper rocky sections above the tree line, where the path is not clearly marked.
What Makes Tulian Lake Different
This is one of the few high-altitude alpine lake treks in Kashmir that can be completed in a single day without camping. The lake itself is uniquely crater-shaped, surrounded by snow-capped peaks on three sides, with ice sheets floating in the water well into the summer.
Practical Tips
- Pony Hire: You can hire ponies at the Pahalgam stand for the climb to Baisaran or the upper valley. Pony rates are fixed by the tourism department.
- Water: The Tulian stream runs along the trail, providing fresh water. Drink from sources above Baisaran to avoid contamination from livestock.
- No Facilities: There are no shops or shelter past Baisaran. Pack your own lunch, rain gear, and a first-aid kit.
