Warwan Valley Trek: The Alpine Glacier Crossing

The Warwan Valley trek covers a distance of 80 kilometers, starting at Panikhar in the Suru Valley of Kargil and ending at Aru Valley near Pahalgam. The trail crosses the Lomvilad Pass at 14,500 feet (4,420 meters), which requires walking over the Kanital Glacier and navigating crevasse zones. The trek takes 8 days.

Day-by-Day Route Breakdown

Day 1: Panikhar to Denora (12 km, 6 hours)
The trek begins at Panikhar village (elevation 10,800 ft) in Kargil. The trail climbs gradually along the Suru River basin to the campsite at Denora (12,100 ft). Mount Nun and Mount Kun are visible from the valley road.

Day 2: Denora to Kalapari (8 km, 5 hours)
You will hike through a dry mountain valley, crossing several small glacier melt streams. The trail ascends past moraine debris to the base camp at Kalapari (12,800 ft).

Day 3: Kalapari to Lomvilad Pass Base (7 km, 6 hours)
The trail climbs steeply over loose scree and boulders. You will reach the edge of the Kanital Glacier. The campsite is pitched on rocky moraine near the glacier snout (13,500 ft).

Day 4: Lomvilad Base to Humpet via Lomvilad Pass (14 km, 9 hours)
This is the pass crossing day. You will rope up to cross the Kanital Glacier, navigating around visible crevasses. The final ascent to the Lomvilad Pass (14,500 ft) is on snow. The descent is steep, leading into the green pastures of the Humpet meadow (11,500 ft) in the Kishtwar district.

Day 5: Humpet to Sukhnai (16 km, 7 hours)
The trail follows the Warwan River downstream. You will exit the rocky zone and enter green pastures populated by birch and pine trees. The stage ends at Sukhnai village (9,900 ft), the first settlement in the Warwan Valley.

Day 6: Sukhnai to Kelnai (12 km, 5 hours)
Trek along the main riverbed of the Warwan Valley, passing local wooden villages. You will camp in the meadows of Kelnai (10,500 ft) near the confluence of local streams.

Day 7: Kelnai to Lidderwat via glacier pass (11 km, 6 hours)
You will cross a secondary high pass to enter the Lidder Valley catchment. The trail is unpaved and runs through alpine pastures to the Lidderwat campsite (9,130 ft).

Day 8: Lidderwat to Aru Valley (10 km, 4 hours)
Descend through the pine forests along the West Lidder River to terminate the trek at Aru village near Pahalgam.

Trek Difficulty & Fitness Reality

The Warwan Valley trek is classified as Difficult and is reserved for experienced trekkers. The Kanital Glacier crossing requires snow safety gear, including microspikes, ropes, and ice axes. Crevasses can be covered by thin snow bridges in early July. You must have high cardiovascular endurance and experience sleeping at altitudes above 12,000 feet.

Best Time for Warwan Valley Trek

The trek is only open during July and August. Before July, the glacier pass is heavily covered in soft winter snow, increasing avalanche risks. By September, fresh snowfall on the Lomvilad Pass can strand trekking groups in the uninhabited high zones. Weather windows are narrow.

How to Reach the Starting Point

To reach Panikhar, drive from Srinagar to Kargil via the Zoji La Pass (204 km), then drive south from Kargil along the Suru Valley road to Panikhar (67 km). The drive takes 2 days. Direct local taxis can be hired in Kargil.

Permits and Guide Requirements

This is a restricted border region trek. You must obtain permits from the Kargil district administration and register your passport or Aadhaar details at the army checkposts in Panikhar and Sukhnai. A professional local mountain guide certified by the IMF (Indian Mountaineering Foundation) is mandatory.

What Makes Warwan Valley Different

This trek offers a stark landscape transition. You start in the dry, rain-shadow Suru Valley of Ladakh, cross a massive glacier system, and emerge into the lush green, isolated logwood villages of the Warwan Valley in Kishtwar before finishing in Pahalgam.

Practical Tips

  • Glacier Safety: Always follow the guide's footsteps on the Kanital Glacier. Do not detach from the rope team.
  • Logistics Support: You must carry all rations for 8 days, as there are no shops between Panikhar and Sukhnai. Mules cannot cross the Lomvilad Pass; you must hire high-altitude porters.
  • Communications: There is no mobile network past Panikhar until you reach Aru. Carry a satellite phone (with official permits) or a radio set for emergency communication.
