How to Reach Doodhpathri from Srinagar: Perfect Day Trip Route
How to Reach Doodhpathri: Complete Travel Guide
Doodhpathri, poetically translating to the "Valley of Milk," is a stunning, lesser-known alpine meadow situated in the Budgam district of Kashmir. Characterized by its rolling green highlands, dense pine forests, and the icy streams that appear milky white as they cascade over pebbles, it is the perfect offbeat destination.
Because it is relatively close to the capital—located a mere 42 kilometers southwest of Srinagar—relying on road transport is the only, and best, way to experience this serene location. Here is how you can get there.
By Air: The Gateway
As with most localized Kashmiri destinations, there is no direct aero or rail connectivity into the mountains themselves.
- Nearest Airport: The journey to Doodhpathri begins at the Srinagar International Airport (SXR), which is exceptionally well-placed for this destination since it is also located in the Budgam district.
- Airport Transit: Doodhpathri is actually closer to the airport (approx. 35 km) than to the heart of Srinagar city. You can hire a cab directly from the airport, allowing you to bypass city traffic entirely and reach the meadows in under an hour.
By Road: The Scenic Mountain Drive
The exclusive means to reach Doodhpathri from Srinagar or surrounding areas is via the road network. The journey is short, delightful, and winds through traditional Kashmiri villages and dense woods.
- Private Taxi via Budgam Route: The most popular and convenient way to travel is by hiring a private taxi (a sedan or an SUV) from Srinagar. The route usually passes through the quaint town of Budgam, onward to Khansahib, and then ascends steeply towards Doodhpathri.
- Travel Time: From the Lal Chowk city center in Srinagar, the drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours of easy driving.
- Shared Transport: If you are a backpacker on a budget, you can attempt to use shared transport. However, there is no direct shared taxi from Srinagar. You will first need to find a shared cab from Srinagar to Budgam, then another from Budgam to Khansahib, and finally hire an exclusive local cab from Khansahib to cover the last uphill stretch to Doodhpathri. This can be tedious, making a direct private taxi the most sensible option.
By Train: Alternative Transit
- The closest railway station is the Budgam Railway Station, which is located on the Banihal-Baramulla route.
- If you are traveling on the local train from Anantnag, you can disembark at Budgam, exit the station, and hire a local taxi right outside to take you directly up to the meadows.
Transportation Tips & Local Advice
- Mobile Connectivity: The road to Doodhpathri enters a fairly remote highland region. Mobile network coverage can become extremely patchy or entirely drop off as you approach the main meadows.
- No Overnight Stay Operations: Doodhpathri largely remains a day-trip destination. There are very few verified overnight accommodations right in the meadows. Keep your transport waiting for your return trip back to Srinagar.
- Winter Travel: Access to Doodhpathri was historically closed during the heavy winter months, but recently the government has made efforts to keep it open longer. Always verify road clearance with your taxi operator if visiting between January and March.
