Drung Waterfall: Visitor Guide for the Tangmarg Frozen Cascade

Drung Waterfall is situated in the Baramulla district of western Kashmir, at the base of the Pir Panjal range. The waterfall is located 3.5 kilometers from Tangmarg town. The waterfall lies along the Ferozpora Nallah, a mountain stream that flows down toward Tangmarg.

You will visit Drung Waterfall in winter to see the frozen ice formations on the cliff face, or in summer for a streamside picnic. The freezing phenomenon is artificial, caused by water spraying from a municipal hydro-power pipe built along the top of the rock face. The spray freezes into columns of ice during January and February.

How to Reach Drung Waterfall

To reach the waterfall from Srinagar, drive northwest on the Srinagar-Gulmarg highway to Tangmarg town (38 km). From the Tangmarg motor stand, take the narrow asphalt road that runs south along the river basin. The distance is 3.5 kilometers. You can drive a standard vehicle to the waterfall parking area from March to December.

In winter (especially January and February), the road experiences heavy snow and ice accumulation. The J&K Traffic Police restrict standard front-wheel-drive cars from using the road. You must hire a local 4x4 taxi with snow chains at the Tangmarg taxi stand. The fixed union fare is ₹1,000 for a round trip with a 45-minute waiting time. Alternatively, you can walk the 3.5-km distance along the snow-covered road, which takes about 60 minutes.

Best Time to Visit Drung Waterfall

Winter runs from December to February. The ice formations peak in size during January and early February, when day temperatures range from 5°C to -5°C. This is the busiest tourist season for the site. Bring warm thermal layers, heavy coats, and boots with snow grips.

Spring and summer are April to September. The ice melts completely by late March, and the waterfall runs as a normal mountain cascade. Temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C. It is a quiet season, and you can access the stream banks for picnics.

Autumn lasts from October to November. The weather is dry and cold, with day temperatures averaging 15°C. The flow of the Ferozpora Nallah is at its lowest level before the winter freezes begin.

Practical Tips for Drung Waterfall

• Winter Footwear: The parking area and pathways near the waterfall become covered in hard-packed ice and snow, which is slippery. Local vendors in Tangmarg rent rubber snow boots for ₹100 per day. Ensure you obtain these before starting the drive.
• Food Stalls: Several local wooden stalls operate near the base of the waterfall, selling tea, kahwa (saffron green tea), and instant noodles (maggi). They accept cash and UPI payments, though mobile network data can be slow due to the mountain terrain.
• Entry and Parking Fees: There is no ticket entry fee to see the waterfall itself. The municipal committee charges a vehicle parking fee of ₹50 at the entrance barrier.
