Shrunz Waterfall: Visitor Guide for the Tangmarg Forest Cascade

Shrunz Waterfall is situated in the Baramulla district of northern Kashmir, located at the foothills of the Pir Panjal range. The waterfall lies approximately 16 kilometers from Tangmarg town, situated along the forest road that branches off the main Tangmarg-Gulmarg highway. The cascade is fed by the Ferozpur Nallah stream.

You will visit Shrunz Waterfall to see an undeveloped forest cascade away from the primary tourist hubs. Reaching the waterfall requires walking a 1.5-kilometer unpaved trail through a pine and fir forest from the nearest vehicle road head. There are no paved steps or handrails along the path.

How to Reach Shrunz Waterfall

To reach the waterfall from Srinagar, drive northwest to Tangmarg town (38 km) on the Srinagar-Gulmarg highway. From Tangmarg, take the road heading toward Baba Reshi shrine and follow the local signs for the Shrunz road head. The driving distance from Tangmarg is 16 kilometers. The road past Baba Reshi is narrow and unpaved in sections.

Public transport does not run directly to the trailhead. You can hire a private taxi from the Tangmarg taxi stand. The round-trip fare is approximately ₹1,200 to ₹1,500, which includes a waiting period of one hour at the road head. Agree on the fare before departure.

Best Time to Visit Shrunz Waterfall

Spring and summer are May to September. Temperatures range from 12°C to 22°C. The forest path is dry, and the volume of water flowing over the cascade is high due to melting glaciers upstream. It is the best period for hiking.

Autumn lasts from October to November. The weather is dry but cold, with day temperatures averaging 12°C and dropping to near freezing at night. The surrounding deciduous trees drop their leaves, and the trail can be slippery.

Winter runs from December to April. Heavy snow blocks the forest road past Tangmarg, making the waterfall inaccessible to vehicles. The stream flow is reduced, and sections of the cascade can freeze during January. Travel during this season is not recommended.

Practical Tips for Shrunz Waterfall

• Footwear: The 1.5-km forest trail is dirt-paved and becomes muddy after rain. Wear rugged hiking shoes or boots with tread. Do not wear sandals or light canvas sneakers.
• Supplies: There are no shops, tea stalls, or toilets at the road head or near the waterfall. Pack your own drinking water and snacks from Tangmarg town. Carry all your trash back with you.
• Mobile Signal: Mobile network coverage is weak. Postpaid connections from BSNL and Jio work intermittently at the road head but lose signal completely once you descend the trail into the forest gorge.
