Yusmarg Doodh Ganga Trek: The Riverside Day Walk
The Yusmarg Doodh Ganga trek covers a distance of 4 kilometers (round trip), starting and ending at the main Yusmarg parking area in Budgam. The trail descends through pine forests to the rocky banks of the Doodh Ganga River at an elevation of 8,200 feet (2,500 meters). The trek takes 2 to 3 hours and is suitable for families.
Route Breakdown
Descent: Yusmarg Meadow to Doodh Ganga Riverbed (2 km, 1 hour)
The walk begins at the edge of the main Yusmarg meadow (elevation 7,861 ft). You will follow a dirt path that descends steeply through a pine and fir forest. The trail drops approximately 150 meters (500 feet) to the river gorge. The path is unpaved and can be slippery after rain.
Return: Riverbed to Yusmarg Meadow (2 km, 1.5 hours)
The return journey follows the same trail uphill. The climb is continuous and requires walking on packed dirt slopes. If you prefer not to walk uphill, you can hire local ponies at the riverbed for the return climb.
Trek Difficulty & Fitness Reality
The trek is classified as Easy. It is a short walk that requires no special mountaineering gear or high-altitude acclimatization. The only challenge is the return climb, which is a steady uphill walk. Wear comfortable walking shoes or sneakers with good tread. Sandals are not recommended.
Best Time for Doodh Ganga Trek
The best season is from April to November. During this period, the road from Srinagar is clear, and the forest trail is dry. In winter (December to February), the trail is covered in snow, and the descent into the shaded river gorge is icy and hazardous.
How to Reach the Starting Point
Drive from Srinagar south through Baghat, Chadoora, and Charar-i-Sharief to Yusmarg (47 km). The drive takes 2 hours. Hire a private cab from Srinagar, or take a shared cab from the Lal Chowk stand to Charar-i-Sharief and transfer to a local private taxi.
Permits and Guide Requirements
No special permits or registrations are required to walk this trail. The path is well-worn and easy to follow; hiring a guide is not necessary. You can walk independently from the parking area.
What Makes Doodh Ganga Different
This is a short day hike that leads to the fast-flowing Doodh Ganga River, which is known for its frothy, white appearance as it runs over limestone boulders. The trail is fully shaded by towering deodar trees and pine forest.
Practical Tips
- Pony Hire: Pony handlers operate from the parking area. Rates for a round trip to the river are fixed by the government and posted on a board.
- Food: Local tea stalls near the riverbed sell hot tea, biscuits, and maggi. Bring your own drinking water.
- Trash: Carry a small bag for your garbage and dispose of it in the bins at the main parking area.
